NHRC asks police to release suspected IPOB/ESN operative’s girlfriend

THE National Human Rights Commission has faulted the detention of one Gloria Okolie by the Nigeria Police Force.

The commission’s Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, demanded that the detainee should be released immediately or be charged to court to avail her of her right to fair hearing.

A police source had said about N17.5m was traced to bank accounts belonging to Gloria Okolie  which was being used to fund members of the militant Eastern Security Network, accused of carrying out violent attacks in the South-East.

She was also said to be the girlfriend of one of the IPOB/ESN members.

The NHRC’s position is contained in a statement by its spokesperson, Fatima Mohammed, on Tuesday titled, ‘Release Gloria Okolie unconditionally or charge her to court, NHRC charges police.’

The statement read, “The National Human Rights Commission has decried the practice of illegally detaining citizens by some law enforcement agencies beyond the constitutionally stipulated ‘reasonable’ time, saying that such an unwholesome act is a gross violation of human rights and must be accounted for, to serve as a deterrent.

“Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu, who stated this in Abuja while reacting to the alleged illegal detention of one Gloria Okolie by the Nigeria Police authorities for over 67 days, observed that such unprofessional conduct cannot be tolerated in the 21st century policing and that perpetrators of such heinous crime must be immediately brought to justice.

“Ojukwu became more disturbed upon learning that the victim while being detained was used as a slave girl to the officers and was terribly abused, washing clothes, sent on errands to buy stuffs for officers, tortured by some of the officers in charge of her detention, hence the need for her release without further delay,” the statement read in part.”
