The National Examinations Council (NECO) has confirmed that the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) will continue as scheduled on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, despite the public holiday declared by the Federal Government in honour of late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The government had announced a seven-day national mourning period and declared Tuesday a public holiday, prompting confusion among students, parents, and school administrators over the status of the examinations.
However, NECO’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Azeez Sani, told Daily Sun on Monday that there would be no postponement, as doing so could disrupt the entire SSCE timetable.
“The exam involving three papers—Physics, Financial Accounting, and Basic Electricity—is holding tomorrow (Tuesday). We can’t afford to postpone it; if we do, it will affect other examinations,” he said.
Also affirming the decision, NECO’s Lagos State Coordinator, Mr. A.S. Adedoyin, issued a notice to all schools in the state, stating that exams will proceed without interruption despite the declared holiday.
“Despite the public holiday declared tomorrow (Tuesday) in honour of the Late President Muhammadu Buhari, our exams will proceed as scheduled,” the notice read. He urged school principals to ensure that all candidates are present and ready for their examinations promptly.
The announcement aims to dispel uncertainties and ensure smooth conduct of the exams across the country, as NECO moves forward with its critical assessment of thousands of senior secondary school students nationwide.
