“My films are for intellectuals” — Actor and Producer Kunle Afolayan reacts to criticism over recent TV series

Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has stirred fresh reactions online after saying his movies are made for “intellectuals.”

The award-winning director made the comment on Instagram while responding to criticism trailing his newly released Anikulapo series.

The project has received mixed reviews since its release, Leadership reported.

While some viewers praised the series for its cultural depth and layered storytelling, others argued that the pacing and themes may not appeal to mainstream audiences.

Reacting to the feedback, Afolayan maintained that his style of filmmaking has always been about telling stories that challenge the mind, not chasing trends.

He noted that feedback from scholars, critics and viewers who appreciate deeper narratives continues to shape his work.

Known for films like October 1, Citation, Anikulapo and Ijogbon, Afolayan has built a reputation for visually detailed productions rooted in history, culture and social commentary.

His recent comment, however, has divided opinion online.

Supporters say Nollywood needs filmmakers who push creative boundaries and elevate storytelling.

Critics, on the other hand, argue that describing films as being for “intellectuals” could alienate the wider audience that keeps the industry running.
