Muhammed Haruna, a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has acknowledged that glitches will inevitably occur in the electronic transmission of election results but stressed that a gradual rollout is necessary given Nigeria’s infrastructural challenges.
Speaking on Monday during an interview with Trust TV News, Haruna addressed concerns surrounding e-transmission and the recently concluded Federal Capital Territory polls.
“There will always be glitches. What is important is to implement it gradually, considering our infrastructure can be tricky, as we’ve already experienced issues with IReV,” he explained.
The commissioner highlighted that while technology is critical for enhancing transparency, it cannot replace the integrity of election officials. He noted that although INEC has deployed sufficient technological tools to prevent electoral fraud, their effectiveness ultimately depends on the conduct of staff.
“There are enough gadgets to stop election malpractice, but success depends on us—the workmen—not the tools we are using,” Haruna stated, emphasizing the human factor as central to credible elections.
