The Niger State Government has confirmed that over 200 bodies have been recovered following the catastrophic floods that recently devastated Mokwa Local Government Area.
The grim update was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmad Suleiman, during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday.
“We are still recovering corpses. As of now, it is impossible to provide an exact death toll because many bodies remain unaccounted for,” Suleiman said.
He noted that the administration of Governor Umar Bago has activated an emergency response plan and is currently distributing relief materials to flood victims sheltered in makeshift camps.
“The Niger State Government has taken swift action. Various agencies and ministries are collaborating to manage the crisis. However, the extent of the destruction cannot be fully captured on social media—you have to see it to understand the scale,” he explained.
Suleiman added that the state has dispatched trailers loaded with rice to affected communities, and the governor’s wife visited Mokwa on Monday, donating ₦50 million to support displaced families.
The flood, triggered by heavy rainfall and the overflowing of local water bodies, has left a trail of destruction, displacing thousands and raising urgent humanitarian concerns.
