Man docked for selling fake condoms in Lagos

A 51-year-old man, Walter Okafor, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly forging branded condom packaging belonging to a private company without due authorisation.

 

 

 

Okafor, whose address was not disclosed in court, is facing a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and forgery.

 

 

 

 

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the allegations brought against him.

 

 

 

 

The police prosecutor, Supol Josephine Ikhayere, informed the court that the alleged offences took place in December 2023, at the Idumota area of Lagos State.

 

 

 

According to the prosecutor, the defendant and some others, who are at large, were involved in the unlawful duplication and forgery of Kiss condom packs in both small and large sizes.

 

 

 

She further told the court that the reproduction was carried out without the knowledge, approval, or consent of TK2 International Nigeria Limited, the company that owns the Kiss condom brand.

 

 

 

The prosecution added that the act contravenes the provisions of Sections 363 and 412 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015, which address offences relating to forgery and conspiracy Section 363 stipulates a punishment of up to three years’ imprisonment for individuals convicted of document or packaging forgery, while Section 412 addresses conspiracy-related offences.

 

 

 

In his ruling, Magistrate Lafeef A. Owolabi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

 

 

 

He also stated that the sureties must be reliable and must provide verifiable means of identification In his ruling, Magistrate Lafeef A.

 

 

 

The case was adjourned till July 1, 2025, for further mention.
