A 37-year-old man, Opeyemi Olaniyan, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing Ayomide Oyekunle to death during a fight at a beer parlour in the Agbado area of Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State.
The incident reportedly occurred during a dispute over a ₦25,000 debt. According to reports, the suspect attacked the victim with a broken bottle, inflicting injuries to his hand and stomach.
The victim was rushed to Strong Tower Hospital for treatment but later died while receiving medical care.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the case was reported to the police by the debtor, identified as Oriade Kehinde.
He explained that the suspect had visited the beer parlour around 11:30 p.m. to demand repayment of the money owed to him since the previous year. When he did not get an immediate response, he became aggressive, broke a bottle, and threatened those present.
“In the process of being restrained from entering the bar, he used the broken bottle to stab Ayomide Oyekunle on the hand and stomach,” Babaseyi said.
Olaniyan has since been taken into police custody, while the deceased’s body has been deposited at Life Channel Morgue for autopsy.
The police spokesperson added that the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID) in Abeokuta for further investigation and possible prosecution.
