Majority group kicks as Lalong-backed faction sits in Govt House

Members of a faction of the Plateau State House of Assembly led by Yakubu Sanda on Tuesday abandoned the assembly complex and moved their sitting to the Government House.

It was gathered that during the sitting attended by about 12 lawmakers backing Sanda as Speaker, they passed a resolution confirming Fabian Ntung as Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission and other officials of the electoral body.

A statement issued after the sitting by Sabastine Hommuk, an aide to Sanda, read, “The Plateau State House of Assembly has confirmed the chairman and members of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission.

“The confirmation was contained in a resolution of the house at its executive session of November 15, 2021, following the receipt of a communication from the governor dated November 12, 2021, requesting for their confirmation by the house.

“The resolution indicated that, given the bad state of the House of Assembly Chambers and with no alternative facility yet provided for the purposes of house sittings, the executive session became imperative.”

According to the statement, other members of SIEC who were confirmed by the Sanda group during their sitting included Lamindi Kaiwani, Joshua Ndom, Partrick Mamgin, Hafsat Amin, Peter Danbenji and James Dashan.

The statement added that the “confirmation has since been forwarded to the governor for further necessary action.”

In its reaction, the faction led by Abok Ayuba warned that any action taken by the Sanda group on behalf of the state House of Assembly would remain an illegality.

The lawmaker representing Riyom Constituency, Timothy Dantong said, “It is unfortunate that they have resolved to continue with illegality in the state and we, 12 of us, have made up our minds not to be part of such illegality.

“So, whatever thing they are doing is simply null and void and of no effect.”
