LOCAL SPRINTERS TARGET FASUBA’S 14 YEAR RECORD

Nigerian sprinters have expressed their desire of breaking the 100m African record set by Olusoji Fasuba over 14 years ago.

Fasuba ran a time of 9.85s at the Doha Grand Prix May 12, 2006, breaking the earlier record of 9.86s set by Namibian, Frankie Fredericks, 10 years earlier.

Nigerian sprinters Seun Ogunkoya, Deji Aliu and Uchenna Emedolu, running sub 10.00s time, all tried in vain to break Fredericks record, before Fasuba erased it in Doha.

The record has been untouched for 14-years, with Divine Oduduru the closest to erasing it, running a time of 9.86s at the NCAA Division I Championships in Texas, June 7, 2019.

Of the active Nigerian athletes who specialise in the 100m, only Oduduru and Raymond Ekevwo have ran sub 10.0s timesin recent times.

Ekevwo ran 9.96s to win the 100m gold at the 2019 African Games in Rabat Morocco.

“Divine Oduduru almost broke the record last year and you can see the consistency. So, in no time, the record would surely be history; it’s motivating the athletes one way or the order to break the record,” Emmanuel Arowolo,  a member of the 4x100m relay team which won silver medal at the 2019 African Games in Rabat,

According to Enoch Adegoke, the advancement in technology will make it easier for Nigerian athletes to break the 14-year record.

“When this will happen is what I don’t know, it might be soon, it might be later,” Adegoke said
