Radimana, Limpopo Province, South Africa — Three worshippers died and several others were injured after a lightning bolt struck a church service in Radimana village in the Senwabarwana area of Limpopo Province, local police confirmed.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning when congregants were attending a night prayer service held inside a tent erected in an open field, according to police. Heavy rain and thunderstorms had begun when the lightning struck the shelter where the worshippers were gathered.
Emergency responders were quickly called to the scene. Three individuals were pronounced dead, while at least five others sustained injuries and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. The condition of the injured has not been disclosed.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said authorities are investigating the circumstances of the strike, including the response and any safety measures in place at the gathering. “The congregation was inside a tent in an open field when lightning suddenly struck,” he stated.
Community leaders and church officials expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. Local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution during severe weather and to seek secure shelter when thunderstorms are forecast.
The incident has drawn attention to the risks associated with open-field structures during adverse weather conditions, especially in areas prone to thunderstorms.
