The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State chapter, has demanded a new minimum wage of N150,000 for workers in the state.
The demand comes just days after the governments of Imo and Ebonyi states announced upward reviews of their workers’ wages.
Chairperson of the Lagos NLC, Funmi Sesi, made the call on Thursday, stressing that workers in the state deserve a wage that reflects the high cost of living, particularly in accommodation, transportation, feeding, and utilities.
According to her, Lagos workers currently earn N85,000 as minimum wage, a figure she described as grossly inadequate given the state’s unique economic pressures.
“The time has come for an upward review of minimum wage in Lagos. At least someone has taken the bull by the horns and opened the space. No one can blame Governor Sanwo-Olu now if he implements a higher wage for Lagos workers,” Sesi said.
She emphasized that better wages and decent working conditions were long overdue for Lagos workers, adding that the recent wage reviews in Imo and Ebonyi provide a model worth emulating across Nigeria.
UGAMA TV reports that Imo State Government earlier in the week announced a new minimum wage of N104,000, while Ebonyi State followed suit with N90,000 for its workers.
Sesi expressed optimism that other states, including Lagos, would soon follow suit to ease the economic burden on their workforce.
