Lagos Declares August 20 Work-Free Day for Public Servants to Celebrate Isese Day

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a work-free day for public servants in honor of the annual Isese Day celebration.

The announcement, issued on Monday, August 18, reaffirms the government’s commitment to safeguarding indigenous traditions while promoting cultural harmony in the state.

Isese Day, which pays tribute to Yoruba traditional religion and heritage, has become a major cultural observance across Nigeria, especially in the Southwest. In Lagos, the holiday has become a yearly tradition, enabling citizens to partake in rituals, festivals, and communal gatherings honoring ancestral legacies and Yoruba deities.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a statement released by the state government, described the observance as a reminder of the importance of cultural preservation in an increasingly modern society.

“Isese Day is a time to reflect on our rich heritage and values as Lagosians. This work-free day provides an opportunity for our people to connect with their roots, celebrate our traditions, and strengthen unity in our diverse state,” he stated.

The governor’s decision has drawn commendation from traditional rulers and cultural advocates, including the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, who lauded the gesture as a boost to Yoruba spirituality and identity.

Activities expected during the celebration include visits to sacred sites, cultural performances, festivals, and communal prayers. The government also encouraged citizens to mark the occasion peacefully while fostering mutual respect across religious and cultural lines.

By joining states such as Oyo and Osun in formally observing Isese Day, Lagos also cements its status as a centre of Yoruba culture and heritage.
