Veteran Nigerian singer Konga has claimed he is entitled to 60 percent of the earnings from Afrobeats star Burna Boy’s song Update, alleging that the track sampled his work without his consent.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, Konga said Burna Boy failed to contact him even after he publicly raised the issue months ago in what he described as a peaceful manner.
He also pointed out that Burna Boy previously agreed to give American singer Toni Braxton 60 percent of the royalties from his 2022 hit Last Last after sampling her song He Wasn’t Man Enough. According to Konga, he believes he deserves similar treatment.
Konga revealed that although he has considered legal action, he has been holding back his lawyers because he appreciates Burna Boy’s music and is proud of the artist’s role in promoting African music globally.
He further claimed that Burna Boy had earlier sampled some of his lyrics in the remix of Sungba featuring Asake.
Konga added that since Burna Boy did not respond to his request to remix his classic track Kabakaba together, he has now decided to sample Burna Boy’s music without seeking permission.
