Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus’ quest for Champions League success again ended prematurely as the Italian champions’ 2-1 win against Lyon on Friday wasn’t enough to send them through.

The French side had won the first leg 1-0, so their opener in Turin meant that the Old Lady needed three goals to reach the quarter-finals.

That opening goal came in controversial fashion as Houssem Aouar appeared to go down under a challenge from Rodrigo Bentancur, seeing a penalty awarded much to Juventus’ dismay, although replays suggest that the foul may have been for a clumsy clip of Memphis Depay’s heels by Federico Bernardeschi. 

Memphis stepped up himself and dispatched a cheeky Panenka to humiliate Wojciech Szczesny.

Juve had their own controversial penalty before the first half had finished, though, as a Miralem Pjanic freekick hit Memphis’ arm and, despite it being tucked in front of his stomach, a penalty was given.

Cristiano Ronaldo assumed responsibility and converted to level the scores on the night.

The Portuguese bagged another in the second half, firing in a long-range effort with his left foot that flew into the top corner.

It was at this same stage last season that the No.7 scored a hat-trick in Turin to complete a comeback that sent Atletico Madrid packing, but despite his best efforts he wasn’t able to send his side into the last eight in his native Portugal.
