The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the receipt of seven additional applications from associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of applications to 129.
This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, following the Commission’s regular weekly meeting held in Abuja.
“At its regular weekly meeting held today, Thursday, 10th July 2025, the Commission received further updates on additional requests from associations seeking registration as political parties. Since last week, seven more applications have been received, bringing the total number so far to 129. All the requests are being processed,” Olumekun stated.
He also revealed that INEC is set to launch a political party registration portal—part of its broader Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System (PFRAS)—to streamline the registration process and eliminate the inefficiencies of the previous manual method.
“Unlike the manual method used in previous registration, the Commission is introducing a political party registration portal, which is a module in our Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System (PFRAS). This will make the process faster and seamless,” he explained.
According to Olumekun, the portal is currently undergoing final testing and is expected to be fully operational within a week. INEC will subsequently announce the next steps for qualified associations to begin formal applications and will release detailed guidelines for filing through the PFRAS platform.
Meanwhile, he noted that the list of newly received applications has been uploaded to the Commission’s website and social media platforms for public access.
