Awgu Water for All: Hon. Uchenna Okolo Leads Historic Clean Water Revolution in One Year

In a powerful demonstration of leadership, innovation, and compassion for his people, the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, has turned a decades-long water scarcity challenge into a story of hope and renewal through his flagship “Awgu Water for All Initiative.”

The ambitious programme — designed to provide clean and sustainable water to every household in Awgu — has become the most impactful grassroots water project in the history of the local government.

Within just one year in office, Hon. Okolo, who holds a Master’s Degree in Geology, has successfully drilled 21 solar-powered boreholes across the 25 communities of Awgu LGA, with 13 fully completed and equipped with overhead tanks, solar energy systems, and reticulation networks already commissioned .

Mbah’s Vision, Okolo’s Execution

The success of the Awgu Water for All Initiative is widely seen as a reflection of the Dr. Peter Mbah administration’s inclusive development philosophy, which has redefined public service delivery in Enugu State.

During a two-day commissioning and inspection tour of projects across Awgu on October 7 and 8, 2025, the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Matters, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, who represented the Governor, described Hon. Okolo’s water programme as “a landmark model of local governance excellence.”

“Hon. Uche Okolo is proving that effective local governance is possible when leaders combine technical knowledge with empathy for their people,” Ogbodo said. “What he has achieved in just one year through the Water for All Initiative is transformative. It is a model that deserves replication across the state.”

Delivering on a Promise, Restoring Dignity

Speaking during the commissioning of the Solar-Powered Boreholes , Hon. Okolo expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah for providing an enabling environment for local governments to deliver tangible results.

“When we promised to end Awgu’s water crisis, some thought it was mere campaign rhetoric. But today, from Agbogugu to Ihe, from Obeagu to Awgunta, families are fetching clean water right in front of their compounds. That is what governance should be about — restoring dignity and improving lives,” he said.

He emphasized that the boreholes were strategically distributed to ensure that no community is left behind, with installations also benefiting public institutions such as schools, health centres, and marketplaces.

“This is not just about drilling boreholes; it’s about building a healthier, more productive Awgu,” he added.

Communities Celebrate “Water of Hope”

Across the communities visited — Ogugu,, Ihe,Ituku, Ogbaku, Isuawa, Owelle Court, Obeagu , Agbogugu, and others — jubilant residents described the boreholes as “the water of hope,” expressing gratitude for finally having access to clean water after decades of hardship.

Traditional rulers, women groups, and youth leaders lauded Hon. Okolo for his foresight and delivery capacity, noting that the borehole systems have already reduced waterborne diseases, saved women from long daily treks, and boosted sanitation across villages.

“Hon. Okolo has given us what no administration ever did — water that runs every day,” said Chief Sunday Nwobodo, a community elder in Agbogugu. “For us, this is life.”

Expanding the Frontiers of Rural Development

Beyond water, Hon. Okolo’s administration has integrated the Water for All Initiative into a broader local development agenda that includes:
• Over 2,000 SatoPan toilets distributed to end open defecation,
• Installation of transformers in power-deprived communities,
• Construction and rehabilitation of access roads linking the Smart Green Schools, and
• Deployment of 600 solar-powered streetlights across 25 communities to improve security.

Commissioner Ogbodo, while inspecting these complementary projects, described Hon. Okolo as “the best among equals” in the local government system of Enugu State.

“He has combined intellect, vision, and compassion. Awgu is now a reference point for rural transformation,” Ogbodo declared.

A Sustainable Legacy in the Making

Hon. Okolo reaffirmed his administration’s determination to complete all 25 solar-powered boreholes by 2026, ensuring that every household in Awgu enjoys sustainable access to potable water powered by renewable energy.

“Water is life, and clean water is the foundation of health and productivity. This project will outlive our administration because it is built on sustainability, powered by the sun, and owned by the people,” he concluded.

As Awgu celebrates this new dawn, residents say Hon. Okolo’s Water for All Initiative has not only quenched their thirst but has become a symbol of inclusive leadership, technical excellence, and people-centered governance.
