IGP orders investigation into viral video of retired officer claiming he was given N2m benefit after 35 years of service

In response to a widely shared video of a retired superintendent of police claiming he received N2 million as a benefit after 35 years of service, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has responded.

The officer who retired from the force on October 1, 2023, claimed in the social media video that he was recently notified by the Nigeria Police Pension Board that N3 million in retirement benefits had been approved.

According to the retired officer, the sum includes N2 million for his entire terminal benefit and N1 million in arrears for the time frame beginning in October 2023. He strongly disagreed with this and urged the IGP to look into it.

Following the release of the video, the IGP issued a statement through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, directing the NPF Pensions Limited to investigate the claims immediately, find any potential errors, and make sure the right steps are taken to resolve the issues brought up.

The IGP underlined that the welfare of active and retired employees continues to be of utmost importance, pointing out that timely and efficient pension administration is essential to preserving employee morale and the institution’s integrity.

Egbetokun acknowledged that efforts to enhance the pension system have been ongoing, but he said that encouraging criticism—like the one featured in the viral video—is crucial to enacting the necessary changes
