Renowned folklore musician and cultural icon, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, has passed away at the age of 95 on Friday night around 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after a prolonged illness.
His passing was confirmed by his eldest son Emma Ejeagha, marking the end of an era for lovers of traditional Igbo highlife music.
Born in 1930 in Imezi Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Ejeagha was a dominant voice on Nigerian airwaves from the 1960s through the late 1990s. His unique storytelling style, laced with proverbs and traditional wisdom, earned him widespread acclaim across generations.
Beyond music, Ejeagha was also a broadcaster and cultural archivist, passionately committed to preserving the Igbo oral tradition through his songs and radio programs.
In 2024, the legendary crooner found renewed relevance when his classic hit “Gwo Gwo Ngwo” inspired a viral dance challenge initiated by popular comedian Brain Jotter, introducing his sound to a younger generation.
Ejeagha’s rich legacy lives on in the hearts of fans, cultural enthusiasts, and musicians he inspired.
