If this was AFCON the nonsense being said would be crazy — Former Congolese footballer Yannick Bolasie slams FIFA over Balogun red card reversal

Former Democratic Republic of Congo winger Yannick Bolasie has openly criticized FIFA’s governing consistency following the contentious decision to overturn American striker Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension just ahead of the USA versus Belgium World Cup clash.

The debate ignited after FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee deferred Balogun’s mandatory one-game suspension, placing the forward on a one-year probationary period under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The highly unusual administrative maneuver cleared the 25-year-old forward to spearhead the American frontline for the critical Round of 16 knockout match on Monday.

Taking to his official X account, Bolasie used the unprecedented ruling to highlight what he views as a glaring double standard in how global football authorities and international media judge different regional tournaments. He suggested that African football would face immense scrutiny under identical circumstances.

“All I’ll say is if this was AFCON and they let a man play after he got a red card, the nonsense being said would be crazy,” Bolasie wrote.

The decision has similarly provoked fury from the opposition camp. The Royal Belgian Football Federation expressed total astonishment at the sudden deferral of Balogun’s penalty. In an official statement released on Sunday, Belgian football authorities emphasized the strictly automatic nature of red card bans under standing tournament guidelines and confirmed they are currently “investigating all potential options” for formal recourse.

While the deferral of a direct red card ban is exceptionally rare, this is not the first time the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has altered standard suspension timelines during this specific World Cup cycle.

A similar controversy unfolded regarding Portuguese icon Cristiano Ronaldo, who entered the tournament carrying a three-game competitive ban for an elbowing offense committed during a qualifying match. Rather than forcing Ronaldo to sit out Portugal’s opening group fixtures, FIFA opted to put his suspension on hold under a comparable probationary arrangement, setting a precedent that critics argue compromises the regulatory integrity of the tournament.
