Gunmen kill Fulani community leader in Kwara

THE head of the Bororo community in Oro-Ago, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Alhaji Sheidu Madawaki, was on Sunday night shot dead by people suspected to be gunmen.

A family source said three gun wielding men stormed the resident of the Bororo leader around 9:30pm on Sunday and shot him.

“They were three in number; one of them was stationed outside the resident, shooting sporadically while two went into the house and shot him in his bedroom.

“They operated with rifles suspected to be AK-47, causing panic and fear in the community,” the source added.

It was gathered that security operatives, including the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Oro Ago Division visited the scene of the incident on Monday.

Madawaki, the source said, paid a courtesy visit to the NSCDC office penultimate Monday “to establish a synergy on how to improve and sustain the existing peaceful coexistence in the kingdom”.

A security source expressed the need for informants to be protected, fueling speculation among family members that he was murdered by the gunmen who feared he might exposed them.

Meanwhile, Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, on Monday met with the Fulani community in the state, reassuring them of fair treatment and urging them to work with the government and other stakeholders to prevent crimes.

The Fulani in Kwara, like other communities in the state, would receive government’s protection and patronage in terms of infrastructure projects and social security programmes, the Governor added.

A statement by Rafiu Ajakaye, Chief Press Secretary to the governor said the meeting was attended by Fulani leaders and representatives from across the 16 local government areas of the state.
