The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, were reportedly attacked by gunmen in Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday.
According to the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, the incident occurred shortly after a political event where Barrister Olumide Akpata formally declared for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Tanko alleged that armed men trailed party leaders from the ADC Secretariat to the residence of Oyegun and opened fire at the compound gate, damaging several vehicles in what he described as a suspected assassination attempt.
He stated that the attack appeared targeted at key figures present at the event, adding that no casualties were reported, though vehicles within the premises were riddled with bullets.
Akpata had previously contested the Edo State governorship election. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident as of the time of filing this report.
