Governor Ishaku calls for review of mining rights

The exclusivity of mining to the Federal Government, according to Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku of Taraba State is among the numerous reasons why Nigerians are vehemently calling for the review of the constitution.

Ishaku who aligned his opinion with that of other governors said many have appealed to the government for a change in style and proffered solutions to achieve a win-win situation, but expressed dismay at the refusal of the federal government to shift grounds.

Ishaku disclosed this while inaugurating the Governing Council of the Taraba State College of Agriculture at the Government House in Jalingo.

He said the exclusivity right to the federal government is worrisome and should be reviewed to promote the development of the sector.

Ishaku claimed that several attempts made by his colleagues on the need to expunge the mining rights from the exclusive list have fallen on deaf ears.

The governor who vowed not to relent in his call for a change and constitutional review of mining rights said ”the mineral below the ground belongs to the Federal government but I have the right on the surface of the ground.”

Wondering why the government at the centre would not allow mining be handled by the state government where the minerals are deposited, he said “So how do you go under the ground without calling on the landowner to access it?”

“That” according to him “is the crux of the matter. And it has not been resolved” adding that the exclusivity of mining to the federal government is one of the reasons people are calling for the review of the constitution.”
