Former U.S. President George W. Bush is not expected to attend a White House ceremony on Thursday honoring his late mother, former First Lady Barbara Bush, according to The Washington Post.
The event, set to take place in the East Room, will be hosted by First Lady Melania Trump and will feature the unveiling of a commemorative postage stamp celebrating Barbara Bush’s legacy. While other Bush family members, including daughter Doro Bush Koch and Alice Yates of the George and Barbara Bush Foundation, are scheduled to attend and speak, George W. Bush’s absence has been confirmed by White House officials.
The former president’s decision to skip the ceremony underscores the longstanding tensions between the Bush family and Donald Trump. Despite acknowledging some of Trump’s political successes, Bush has consistently distanced himself from the former president, refusing to endorse or vote for him in the 2016 and 2020 elections.
Trump has also taken jabs at Bush over the years, once describing his presidency as “uninspiring.”
While the tribute to Barbara Bush is expected to be a moment of national reflection, the absence of her son adds a layer of political undertone to the event, further highlighting the deep divide within the Republican Party’s leadership past and present.
