Former presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, has stated that his decision to serve as Senior Special Assistant on Media to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari did not amount to a betrayal of his former principal, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Shehu made the clarification on Tuesday in Abuja during a media interface ahead of the launch of his upcoming memoir titled “According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson’s Experience,” which is set for public presentation on July 9, 2025.
Addressing concerns over his political allegiance, Shehu explained that after the 2014 APC presidential primary, all aspirants, including Atiku, donated their campaign structures and assets to Buhari, who emerged the party’s flagbearer.
“I did not betray Atiku. All those who contested with Buhari in 2014 donated their campaign assets to him. It was based on that that I was appointed the spokesperson for the campaign council, and later as presidential spokesperson after the election,” Shehu said.
He emphasized that his decision was in line with the collective interest of the party and followed the political consensus that formed after the APC primary.
The memoir, according to Shehu, captures his firsthand experiences and lessons from nearly a decade of working at the highest levels of Nigeria’s political communication space.
