Former Super Eagles Goalkeeper Peter Rufai Reportedly Dies at 61

According to online sources, former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, fondly known as Dodomayana, has reportedly passed away in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, 2025, following a prolonged illness that kept him out of the public spotlight in recent years.

 

As of the time of this report, Rufai’s family has not officially confirmed his death.

 

Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s finest goalkeepers, Rufai enjoyed an illustrious playing career that spanned over two decades. He played professionally in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, earning admiration for his skill, composure, and leadership on the field.

 

Rufai proudly represented Nigeria at two FIFA World Cup tournaments and featured in two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) competitions, cementing his legacy as a national football icon.

 

His reported death comes on the same day the global football community is mourning the loss of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, making it a particularly somber moment for fans around the world.
