Fire destroys building in Ibadan, renders students, others homeless

A storey-building located off University of Ibadan Second Gate area was on Wednesday destroyed by fire.

Our correspondent gathered that the fire started from one of the rooms upstairs and raged quickly.

Occupants of the nearby buildings were said to have called the fire fighters, even as men of the Federal Fire Services as well as their state counterparts responded to the distress call.

The firemen joined efforts and fought the fire which raged through the roof and destroyed parts of the building.

Some of the rooms and the roof of the buildings were destroyed by the fire but the firefighters battled the inferno until it was put out and prevented from destroying the entire building.

Some of the students living in the building were heard telling their neighbours that they did not have anywhere to sleep as fire had destroyed their rooms.

One of the officials of the Federal Fire Fighters approached at the scene told our correspondent that they did not know the cause of the fire.

He said, “We do not know what caused the fire, but the first thing which is to put the fire out has been done. After this, we will investigate what caused it.”

The Director of Operations, Oyo State Fire Services, Mr Ismail Adeleke, when contacted, also confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
