FG retrieves passports, plans repatriation of Nigerians stranded in CAR

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed contact with Nigerians stranded in the Central African Republic.

According to a statement by spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa on Friday, July 25 in Abuja, officials from Nigeria’s mission in Bangui have reached the affected citizens.

The embassy is currently working closely with local authorities to guarantee their safety, protection, and swift repatriation. Their passports have been successfully retrieved, and a vehicle has been dispatched to Bambari to evacuate them. They are expected to arrive in Bangui under military escort on Saturday, July 26, 2025.

This development follows a viral video showing Nigerian workers abandoned by their employers and facilitators in the Bambari region, located about 850 kilometres from the capital. Discussions are ongoing with the company responsible for their employment to arrange temporary accommodation and welfare in Bangui before their return to Nigeria.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of Nigerian citizens abroad. Nigerians seeking employment overseas are urged to verify the credibility of their employers and ensure proper documentation before travel.

Citizens are also advised to register their presence—and that of their employees—with the Nigerian Embassy in any foreign country to avoid complications during consular emergencies.
