The Federal Government has inaugurated state-of-the-art facilities at the National Obstetric Fistula Centre (NOFIC), Ebonyi State, including a modern intensive care unit (ICU), a new maternity complex, and a fully functional oxygen plant. The unveiling took place on Tuesday under the supervision of Permanent Secretary, Daju Kachollom, of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
Kachollom commended NOFIC’s management for transforming the hospital into a leading healthcare facility. She noted that the centre, the first of its kind in Nigeria, has saved countless lives since its inception and urged staff to maintain high standards of service delivery. “I’m impressed with the facilities and infrastructure. Ebonyi has outpaced other states in terms of equipment. I charge you to serve patients with utmost care,” she said.
The Medical Director of NOFIC, Dr Johnson Akuma Obuna, highlighted that the new ICU and oxygen plant support key mandates, including fistula prevention, training of medical personnel, and provision of free treatment. The oxygen plant, producing approximately 96 cylinders of 40 cubic centimetres daily, not only supplies the hospital but also neighboring facilities, generating additional revenue.
Dr. Obuna also noted that the newly built maternity complex has been fully funded and called on the federal government to provide intervention funds to repair the hospital’s collapsed premises, ensuring a safer environment for patients and staff.
