FG approves digital postcode system to boost mail processing

Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council has approved the implementation of a GIS-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system aimed at modernising the country’s national addressing framework.

The development was announced by Bosun Tijani after the council meeting presided over by Bola Tinubu.

The approval marks a major step in the rollout of the initiative, which was first introduced four years ago. In 2022, the Nigerian Postal Service signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Population Commission to support the implementation of a digitised postcode system across the country.

In a post on X, Tijani said the project forms part of the ministry’s broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and improve national addressing systems. “We will introduce a modern, geospatial intelligent addressing system that improves accuracy across the country and enables faster and more reliable mail and parcel processing,” he said.

The minister explained that the system would be implemented in collaboration with NIPOST, which is currently led by Tola Odeyemi. According to him, the initiative will go beyond improving postal services and will also support wider national development goals.

“Beyond strengthening postal operations, the Digital Postcode System will also serve as an important national enabler supporting better national planning, improved emergency response, more efficient logistics and e-commerce, and the delivery of government services,” Tijani added.

He noted that as Nigeria’s digital economy continues to grow, foundational systems such as a modern addressing structure are essential for improving connectivity between citizens, businesses and public institutions.

The minister said the council’s approval reflects the federal government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for a modern, inclusive and globally competitive digital economy.
