Family demands justice for slain Anambra woman

The family of 65-year-old Regina Nwoye has appealed to President Bola Tinubu, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, and relevant security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into her k!lling and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

A petition obtained by Punch and signed by her daughter, Blessing Uwechia, a broadcast journalist, urged authorities to immediately investigate the killing and prosecute all those involved, stressing that everyone responsible must be held accountable.

Nwoye was reportedly attacked at her residence in Ogbu Village, Ivite Umueri, in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state on July 14, 2026.

According to the petition, the deceased was st@bbed multiple times and sustained severe injuries before she was left to bleed.

The family alleged that although residents responded after hearing her cries for help and apprehended one suspect identified as Sunday Ndukaife, there were indications that more than one person might have participated in the attack.

The petition read in part, “My mother was brutally attacked, st@bbed, and left to bleed to de@th. Someone heard her shouting and alerted other villagers, but by the time they arrived, she had already sustained life-threatening injuries.

“The community apprehended one of the suspects and handed him over to the police. Although he claimed he acted alone, some members of the community said they saw two people at the scene.”

“My mother would have survived if the hospitals consulted had agreed to treat her promptly. Instead, she was moved from one hospital to another in Awka for several hours before she eventually died,” the petition stated.

The family urged the authorities to conduct a comprehensive, transparent, and impartial investigation into the k!lling.

“Our family is not asking for special treatment. We are asking for what every Nigerian deserves—truth, justice, and accountability,” the petition added.

Commenting on the matter, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochi Ikenga, confirmed receiving the petition.

“I have seen the petition. I don’t know who is investigating the case,” he said.
