Failing to Serve Their Purpose”: Ex-Commissioner Calls for IDP Camps Shutdown

Former Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, Evangelist Tor Uja, has urged the immediate closure of all Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across the country, describing them as “a massive fraud” that benefits only a few while leaving the actual victims in prolonged hardship.

Uja made the call on Monday, July 14, 2025, during a meeting with Christian leaders from different denominations at the Mission House International Headquarters in Makurdi.

His remarks followed a review of his recent visits to displaced persons in Yelewata and Makurdi.

“We want the Benue State government, in conjunction with the Federal Government, to close down IDP camps right now,” Uja declared.

“None of these camps has been productive. They were meant to be temporary, but have turned into long-term destruction. Every IDP camp is a fraud and a destructive element.”

He condemned the continuous operation of the camps, stating that they had failed to serve their original purpose and instead contributed to the dehumanization of their occupants.

He urged the government to prioritize rebuilding destroyed communities and relocating displaced persons to safe and modern settlements close to their ancestral homes.

The evangelist also faulted the Federal Government for its failure to decisively address the ongoing security crisis caused by herdsmen and bandits.

He referenced Israel and the United States as examples of countries that have confronted similar threats head-on.

“We need a new way of looking at our people and their environment,” he said, adding “and bringing decisive action that will enable them not only to live in peace but also to produce for development.”

Uja further called on Christian leaders to intensify support for displaced communities by working with traditional rulers and other relevant stakeholders to provide interventions in healthcare, education, and child welfare.
