Enugu Police Arrest Over 5,000 Suspects, Rescue 113 Kidnap Victims in Six Months

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 5,176 suspected criminals, including kidnappers, murderers, armed robbers, cultists, and other offenders, in a six-month anti-crime operation across the state.

Commissioner of Police, Mamam Bitrus Giwa, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Enugu. He said the arrests were made between March 11 and September 11, 2025, since he assumed office as the 24th Commissioner of Police in the state.

According to him, the suspects were apprehended through intelligence-led policing, raids on criminal hideouts, stop-and-search operations, and tactical surveillance.

The CP also revealed that 113 kidnapped victims were rescued within the same period, with many already reunited with their families.

“We have remained relentless in our pursuit of criminals and in ensuring that Enugu State continues to be safe for residents, investors, and visitors,” Giwa stated.

Among items recovered were ₦10 million in cash, assorted firearms, live ammunition, dangerous weapons, and 21 exotic vehicles, many suspected to have been stolen or snatched at gunpoint.

The police boss called on residents whose vehicles may have been stolen to visit the Command Headquarters with valid proof of ownership for identification and possible recovery.

Giwa noted that many of the arrested suspects had already been charged to court, while others remain under investigation. He commended the collaboration of sister security agencies, vigilante groups, and citizens who provided credible information, stressing that security remains a collective responsibility.

He also warned criminal elements to desist from unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law, while assuring residents of enhanced patrols, intelligence-gathering, and proactive policing.

The Commissioner urged the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious movements, pledging that all information provided would be treated with confidentiality.
