The Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State has announced an immediate suspension of masquerade activities in Iheakpu-Awka community following violent attacks on road users linked to Akatakpa masquerades.
In a statement issued from the office of the Executive Chairman, Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, the council explained that the decision came after consultations with security agencies and traditional leaders.
The council referenced a recent incident on Monday, August 18, 2025, at Ezzi, Iheakpu-Awka, where a commuter from Kogi State was assaulted by individuals disguised as Akatakpa masquerades. The victim sustained injuries and required brief hospitalization.
“It was established that the Akatakpa masquerade activities, while deeply rooted in cultural heritage, were being exploited by some individuals as a cover for acts of violence and intimidation,” the statement noted.
To safeguard the lives and rights of residents and visitors, the council announced the following measures:
Immediate Suspension: All Akatakpa masquerade activities in Iheakpu-Awka are suspended for the entire year 2025, effective from Tuesday, August 19.
Enforcement: Any Akatakpa masquerade found operating in the community or surrounding areas during the suspension will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Security Directive: Security operatives have been mandated to strictly enforce the suspension.
While reaffirming commitment to preserving cultural traditions, the council stressed that such practices must not become instruments of violence or intimidation.
“The Igbo-Eze South Local Government Council, under the leadership of Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, remains dedicated to protecting public peace, security, and the dignity of all persons within the LGA,” the statement concluded.
