The Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Dr. George Ugwu, has cautioned health workers across the state against negligence and dereliction of duty, warning that the government will not hesitate to sanction anyone found wanting.
Dr. Ugwu gave the warning during an unscheduled inspection visit to the Agbani General Hospital in Nkanu West Local Government Area on Monday. He was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The commissioner emphasized that public health workers have a sacred responsibility to uphold professionalism, discipline, and integrity in the discharge of their duties. He noted that the era of impunity, laxity, and indifference to duty in the state’s healthcare system is over.
According to him, the inspection was part of the government’s broader strategy to promote accountability, improve efficiency, and ensure compliance with standard operating procedures across all health facilities in the state.
During the visit, Dr. Ugwu assessed the hospital’s infrastructure, medical equipment, and patient care services. He directed immediate corrective measures where lapses were observed.
He also commended the Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area, Hon. John Ogbodo, for the ongoing renovation and landscaping projects at the hospital, describing them as commendable steps toward enhancing healthcare delivery in the area.
Dr. Ugwu expressed disappointment over cases of absenteeism and indiscipline among some health workers, warning that such behavior would no longer be tolerated. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure, promoting staff welfare, and ensuring quality service delivery in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of repositioning the health sector.
