Afikpo, Ebonyi State — No fewer than eight people have lost their lives after a devastating flood swept through Enohia Itim community in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, leaving over 800 farmlands destroyed.
The tragedy, which occurred following days of heavy rainfall, was confirmed on Monday by the Public Relations Officer of the council, Mr. Sunday Nkama. According to him, the flood struck a plantain plantation in the area, claiming eight lives — including three children.
Nkama disclosed that while three bodies have been recovered, five victims remain missing as search and rescue efforts continue.
Councilor representing Itim Ward, Hon. Francis Abani Okpani, described the incident as a severe blow to the community, noting the massive loss of livelihoods and property.
Chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area, Timothy Nwachi, expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and offered condolences to bereaved families. He pledged that the council, in partnership with relevant state and federal agencies, would provide humanitarian assistance and immediate relief to those affected.
Nwachi also recalled earlier warnings by the Federal Ministry of Environment, which had listed Afikpo among flood-prone areas in Nigeria. He urged residents to adopt climate change projections in their flood risk management plans, maintain functional drainage systems, and keep waterways clear of debris to reduce the risk of future disasters.
