Eguavoen set for Stade Malien job

Former Super Eagles coach, Austin Eguavoen, is set to be named head coach of Malian giants Stade Malien de Bamako.

According to reports, Eguavoen is expected to arrive in Mali on Tuesday (today) to hold further talks with the management of the club before signing a contract.

The former Eagles defender, who last managed Greek club, APS Zakynthos, between September 2018 and February 2019 told newsmen in August that he was eyeing a return to the dugout.

He said, “I hope I return as soon as possible because I’m itching to come back, but hopefully, that happens as quickly as possible.”

The 55-year-old represented Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup, winning the African Cup of Nations same year, before calling it quits with the national team after the France 1998 World Cup. He started his coaching career in Malta with Sliema Wanderers in 2000 and guided the club to a second-place finish that season.

Eguavoen went on to coach Nigerian club Bendel Insurance in 2002 before being named Nigeria U-20 coach.

In 2005, he became head coach of the Eagles and steered them to a third-place finish at the 2006 AFCON in Egypt.
