The Edo State Government has issued a one-week ultimatum to former Deputy Governor Godwin Omobayo to return all government property and assets still in his possession.
The directive was contained in a statement released on Tuesday by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Omobayo was sworn in on April 8, 2024, by Chief Judge Daniel Okungbowa after being nominated by former Governor Godwin Obaseki, following a fallout between Obaseki and his former deputy, Philip Shaibu. Shaibu was later reinstated by the state House of Assembly after his impeachment was nullified.
According to the government’s statement, all items acquired or used by Omobayo in the course of his service remain the property of the Edo State Government and must be returned immediately.
“The government has observed with dismay that several official items, including vehicles, documents, and other state-owned assets assigned to Mr. Omobayo during his brief and illegitimate tenure, are yet to be surrendered to the appropriate authorities, despite multiple formal reminders,” the statement read.
“The continued retention of such property constitutes a clear breach of public trust and unlawful possession of state assets. The Edo State Government reiterates that all assets acquired or utilised in the course of public service remain the property of the State and must be duly returned upon cessation of office.”
Itua further stated that failure to comply within the stipulated one-week period would compel the government to direct the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, to effect Omobayo’s arrest and recover all state assets still in his possession through lawful means.
