Ebonyi State University (EBSU) has officially welcomed 11,500 newly admitted students during its 28th matriculation ceremony held over the weekend.
The event took place at the institution’s permanent campus in Ezzangbo, located in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The large turnout of students, parents, guardians and well-wishers led to heavy traffic congestion along the Abakaliki–Ezzangbo–Enugu expressway.
At the close of the ceremony, many attendees were reportedly forced to trek long distances due to transportation challenges caused by the massive crowd.
Governor Francis Nwifuru, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Donatus Ilang, cautioned the new students against engaging in cultism, examination malpractice and other social vices. He urged them to remain focused on their academic pursuits, stressing that their primary purpose in the university is to acquire knowledge and build their future.
The governor also highlighted several steps taken by his administration to strengthen the institution, including increased monthly subventions, salary enhancements for staff, payment of outstanding debts, and improvements in infrastructure.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Michael Awoke, charged lecturers to remain committed to their responsibility of teaching and mentoring students effectively. He also advised the matriculating students to uphold discipline, maintain good character, and avoid actions that could tarnish their personal image or that of the university.
