In reaction to the numerous news and videos of citizens complaining of filling stations selling adulterated fuel to them which has in turn damaged their vehicles and machineries making rounds on the internet, the Deputy minority leader and member representing Awgu, Aninri, and Oji-River federal constituency in Enugu State has called on the parliament to investigate its release and sale across the country.
Hon. Okechukwu who made this call during a plenary by the house of representatives spoke on the redundancy of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC in carrying out its duties to the citizens effectively.
Addressing the floor, he said “This need to investigate the release and sale of adulterated premium motor spirit in petroleum stations across Nigeria is important, unfortunately what we have seen is that this parliament have been hired by NNPC to work for it.
“We are investigating the refineries that are not working. I do not know what to say about a revenue generating agency of government that has not been able to put into production any of our refineries for the past few years. To bring in aviation fuel oil means that we want to weaponize it against Nigeria because it can be taken into an aircraft and it burst into flames.
“What we are doing is a situation where we are heavily tolerant. They have said its 3 trillion that we have to spend every year, and we are reiterating overhead cost, recurrent cost for the refineries for the past 7 years’, he complained.
Speaking on some underlying challenges of security in the country, he added that “Each time we will be looking what are the challenges of security, the consequential effect of the refineries working, and then put into production is the employment of young people, and NNPC is not doing any of this, and the simple thing as per due diligence to import petroleum product have become a war that we have to win’.
Consequently, the lawmaker called on the government to restitute Nigerians who have had loss over the negligence of the agency to carry out its job diligently.
“Any production of any refinery must have to investigate the quality of what they are putting out. NNPC, its agencies who are not minimally contributing to the federation account, are not fit for purpose and I do not know why we should spend our man hours in addition to the consequences we are suffering. The time has come, when we have to find out if that agency is fit for purpose”, he concluded.
