Suspected kidnappers launched a deadly ambush on security operatives in Abraka community, Delta State, in what appears to be a reprisal attack following the killing of four members of their gang.
According to online reports, the attackers targeted a joint team of police officers, local vigilantes, and hunters, resulting in a fierce gun battle. Although the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, some security personnel were reportedly killed or injured during the confrontation.
The incident comes after a tragic chain of events that began earlier in the week when two residents, who had gone into the bush for a land transaction on Wednesday, were found murdered. Their deaths prompted swift action from the police, who mobilised local hunters and vigilantes for a joint operation that led to the killing of four suspected kidnappers, including a gang leader.
In response, the criminal group reportedly set up a blockade targeting vehicles entering Abraka. Upon receiving intelligence about the ambush, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) led a team to the area, only for them to come under heavy fire from the waiting gunmen.
Amidst the rising tension in the community, the killing of a local resident, Marcus Dafe, who had participated in a protest against insecurity just days earlier, has further heightened fears. Two bodies were recovered from the scene following the latest attack.
The situation has added to growing concerns over escalating violence and tensions between local residents and northern settlers in the region.
