The National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), Peter Ameh, has faulted Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for opting to return to office after his suspension by the Federal Government.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Ameh argued that Fubara’s decision reflects a personal ambition to reclaim power rather than a principled stand for democracy.
UGAMA TV had reported that Fubara’s camp announced a countdown to his anticipated return on September 18, 2025.
But Ameh expressed disappointment, insisting that the embattled governor “put his return to office above principle.”
“For me, I’m already disappointed in Fubara that he has shown… what he wants is to get back to office. I think he would have given it all up. It wouldn’t have been bad to fight for the future generation,” Ameh said.
The CUPP chieftain further accused state authorities of deploying state machinery against Fubara, leaving him “beaten to surrender.”
“That is not good for our democracy… our instrumentality of the state was deployed against him, and he surrendered,” he added.
Ameh stressed the importance of nurturing Nigeria’s democratic process, saying the country must strengthen its institutions to ensure young and future generations can exercise their franchise without fear.
President Bola Tinubu had on March 18, 2025, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the House of Assembly following a prolonged political feud between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
In Fubara’s absence, Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Sole Administrator, tasking him with restoring stability to the oil-rich state.
