Court Sentences ‘Mama Boko Haram’ and Two Others to 14 Years Imprisonment Over N11m Fraud

Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, convicted and sentenced Aisha Alkali Wakil, popularly known as Mama Boko Haram, along with Tahiru Saidu Daura and Prince Lawal Shoyode, to 14 years in prison each.

According to a statement by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the trio was arraigned on September 14, 2020, by the Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence, totaling N11 million.

One of the charges stated that in July 2018, the defendants—while serving as CEO, Programme Manager, and Country Director of the NGO, Complete Care and Aids Foundation—conspired with one Saidu Mukhtar (currently at large) to defraud one Muhammed Ambare of Muhammed Ambare Ventures. They falsely promised to execute a contract for the supply, installation, and servicing of two X-Ray Machines (Model 1800), a contract which they never fulfilled.

The defendants pleaded not guilty, prompting a full trial. During the proceedings, EFCC counsel Mukhtar Ali Ahmed and S.O. Saka presented one witness and several documents as evidence.

In her ruling, Justice Kumaliya found the accused guilty on both counts and sentenced each to seven years imprisonment per count, with the terms to run concurrently. Additionally, the judge ordered them to jointly refund N8 million to the victim or serve an extra seven years in jail.

The case stemmed from their fraudulent scheme, which led the victim to pay N11 million into an account belonging to Saidu Mukhtar. The contract was never carried out, and the funds were not returned.
