Court Sentences Former Benue Varsity Student as School Vows Tougher Security Measures

The Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi,( MOAUM ) Benue state has reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property on campus, warning that anyone found engaging in vandalism, theft or any other criminal activity will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Chief Security Officer, Gbehe Simon Ingbian, gave the assurance during a visit to the Director of Information, Protocol and Public Relations, Ms. Funmilayo Augustina Tolufashe.

He said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Security Unit and the Directorate to enhance security awareness, public sensitisation and effective dissemination of security-related information across the University Community.

Ingbian disclosed that on Tuesday, 14th July, 2026, the University’s Security Unit arrested and handed over one Victor Dzer, a former student of the Department of Economics, to the Nigeria Police Force, ‘E’ Division, Makurdi, for allegedly vandalising a component of an air-conditioning unit belonging to the University.

He explained that the matter was subsequently prosecuted before Magistrate Court 9, Makurdi, where the accused was convicted and sentenced to one year imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Mr Ingbian said the judgment was as a strong deterrent to would-be offenders as the institution would not condone any act capable of endangering lives or destroying institutional property.

He reaffirmed that the security unit would continue to intensify surveillance and ensure that anyone found engaging in vandalism, theft or other criminal acts is apprehended and brought to justice.

Mr Ingbian said the ultimate goal is to eliminate criminal activities and sustain a safe, secure and conducive environment for learning, teaching, research and community service.

Responding, the Director of Information, Protocol and Public Relations, Ms. Funmilayo Augustina Tolufashe, commended the Security Unit for its professionalism, vigilance and unwavering dedication to protecting lives and University property.

She assured the Chief Security Officer of the directorate’s full support, noting that sustained collaboration between the two units would further strengthen public awareness, promote compliance with university regulations and reinforce the institution’s zero-tolerance policy against crime.

Tolufashe urged members of the university community to remain security conscious, report suspicious movements and cooperate with security personnel in the collective effort to protect lives, property and the university’s critical infrastructure.
