A commercial motorcyclist, Akeem Jimoh, on Tuesday appeared before an Osun State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo for gambling N250,000 on credit.

The 23-year-old Jimoh was accused of playing in a two sports bet shops and promising to pay later; a pledge he did not fulfill.

The defendant, who was arraigned on two counts bordering on fraud, pleaded guilty to the crime.

The defendant, who came from Ondo State to Osogbo, Osun State, during the last Eid-el-fitri celebration, had decided to stay some days in the state, when he approached a betting shop, placed a bet and won N200,000.

A few days afterwards, Jimoh was said to have gone to another shop and placed a bet of N100,000 with an assurance to pay later, but he reportedly lost the bet.

Having managed to escape from the scene, Jimoh reportedly approached another shop and placed a bet of N150,000 on credit, but also lost it.

He was subsequently held by the shop attendants and arraigned.

The police prosecutor, Kayode Adeoye, said, “The offences are contrary to and punishable under Section 419A of the Criminal Code Cap. 34 Vol. Il Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.”

The magistrate, Mr Adebayo Ajala, said the defendant was arraigned on a wrong charge and directed that he be remanded in custody or released on bail.

He told the police to re-arraign him on a correct charge.
