Citizens can report corruption through phone lines –ICPC

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other-Related Offences Commission on Thursday said the deployment of security gadgets, including body cameras, had assisted in the tracking and prosecution of electoral offenders in Nigeria.

The agency added that it had, therefore, strengthened its fight against political corruption and electoral fraud with the opening of telephone lines “through which citizens can report any form of corruption in the country ahead of the 2023 general elections.”

The chairman of ICPC, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, SAN, represented by the commissions’ Director of Enlightenment and Education, Mohammed Ashiru Baba, said these in Abuja during a community engagement organised by Say No Campaign in collaboration with MacArthur Foundation.

He said, “It is imperative to note that electoral frauds, ranging from vote selling and vote buying, ballot box snatching, falsification or manipulation of election results, among others, are ICPC considers as political corruption and they are punishable under the Electoral Act.

“The commission had in recent past, deployed sensitive security gadgets such as body camera, in monitoring elections across the country and had discovered various infractions for which it had prosecuted a number of offenders.”

Also speaking, Garba Abari, Director-General of National Orientation Agency, represented by his Special Assistant, David Akoji, called on everybody to raise their voices against electoral infractions.
