Catholic group condemns killings, wants Ishaku to resettle IDPs

The St. Augustine Tiv Catholic Community in Jalingo diocese on Sunday condemned the rising insecurity in the country, especially the recent killings in Jos, Benue and other parts of the country.

The Catholic community which express deep worry that the country was being turned into a killing field called on the President, Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to see the hand writing on the wall and act fast.

This is contained in a communiquè issued at the end of the 2021 annual conference held at St. Robert Bellarmin’s Institute for Catechesis and Religious Education, Jimlari, near Jalingo and signed by the President, Mr. Denis Hembaor.

While lamenting the killings, mass abduction of innocent school children and other forms of criminality across the nation, the Catholic community called on Nigerian leaders to urgently address the issues before the country gets to a point of no return.

The communiquè read partly, “While we condemn the general insecurity in the country, we call on the government and all stakeholders in Taraba State to make more efforts to bring lasting peace in central and southern parts of the State which have not known peace since 2014.

“Most families in the central zone of the State have lost their sources of livelihood and have been denied access to their farmlands since 2014.

“The crisis in Southern Taraba in 2019 through 2020 have equally forced people into internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps without any hope of when to return to their ancestral land.

“We want to call on the Taraba State government to redouble her efforts in ending the crisis and make adequate security arrangement for the safe return of all displaced persons back to their homes in Wukari, Ibi, Donga, Takum, Gassol and Bali Local Government Areas and resettle them accordingly.”
