Buhari presides over first FEC meeting after sacking two ministers

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), presided over the first Federal Executive Council Meeting that preceded the sacking of two ministers in his cabinet.

The virtual FEC meeting held on Wednesday at the conference room of the First Lady’s office, State House Abuja.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Secretary to Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha and Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari are among those who attended the meeting.

Also present were Ministers of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, Aviation, Hadi Sirika, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; and Labour, Dr Chris Ngige.

Others include Ministers of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu and that of State, Budget, and National Planning Clement Agba.

The Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan, and other Ministers are attending virtually from their various offices in Abuja.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had sacked the Minister of Agriculture, Mohammed Nanono and his Power counterpart, Saleh Mamman, last Wednesday.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, announced this on Wednesday, quoting Buhari as saying that more ministers may be sacked after a continuous review.

He said the Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abubakar has been redeployed to the Ministry of Agriculture while the Minister of State for Works, Abubakar Aliyu is to take over as Minister of Power.

The statement quoted Buhari as saying “these significant review steps have helped to identify and strengthen weak areas, close gaps, build cohesion and synergy in governance, manage the economy and improve the delivery of public good to Nigerians.

“Change is the only factor that is constant in every human endeavour and as this administration approaches its critical phase in the second term, I have found it essential to reinvigorate this cabinet in a manner that will deepen its capacity to consolidate legacy achievements.

“Accordingly, a few cabinet changes, marking the beginning of a continuous process, have been approved.”

“In due course, substantive nominations will be made to fill the consequential vacancies in accordance with the requirements of the constitution.

“I wish to reiterate once more, that this process shall be continuous.”
