Muhammed Babangida, son of former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), has turned down his recent appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
His decision was revealed in a letter dated July 21, 2025, and made public by media entrepreneur and politician Dele Momodu via his Instagram account on Monday.
In the letter titled “Declining Appointment as Chairman, Bank of Agriculture,” Babangida expressed gratitude for the honour but cited “personal and professional considerations” as reasons for declining the offer.
“I wish to express my sincere gratitude for the honour of being considered and appointed as chairman of the Bank of Agriculture. It is a true privilege to be thought worthy of such a strategic role in advancing the nation’s agricultural and economic development,” the letter reads in part.
“After careful reflection and consultation, I have decided, with utmost respect, to decline the appointment. This decision was not made lightly. It stems from a convergence of personal and professional considerations, which, at this time, would not allow me to serve with the level of focus and commitment the position rightly demands.”
Babangida emphasized his continued support for the Tinubu administration and national development, stating he remains available to serve the country in other capacities that align with his expertise.
His rejection comes barely two days after his appointment was officially announced by the Presidency as part of efforts to reposition key federal agencies.
Reacting to the decision, Dele Momodu—who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—praised Babangida’s stance.
“Well done, Muhammed, for rejecting a Greek gift,” Momodu wrote on Instagram, hinting at possible political undertones.
Meanwhile, the ADC has also criticized President Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of using strategic appointments to curry favour in Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
