Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, accompanied by his wife Maria Lúcia Alckmin, arrived on Tuesday at the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, marking the official start of the Second Session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM).
According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, media aide to Nigeria’s Vice President, the visit represents a major step forward in Nigeria’s South-South diplomatic agenda, with expectations for breakthroughs in agriculture, energy, and industrial development.
The Brazilian delegation was warmly welcomed by senior Nigerian officials, including Deputy Chief of Staff to the President Ibrahim Hadejia, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Livestock Development Idi Maiha, and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Senator Abubakar Kyari.
Speaking at the airport, Hadejia hailed the visit as “a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” stressing the importance of deepening cooperation with Brazil.
“This strategic dialogue reflects our determination to build effective South-South partnerships that bring real progress to our people,” he said. “Brazil’s strengths in agribusiness, clean energy, and industrial growth are closely aligned with Nigeria’s national development goals.”
The three-day summit is expected to conclude with the signing of over 30 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering areas such as defence cooperation, agricultural technology, energy partnerships, and cultural exchange, ushering in a new phase of stronger Nigeria-Brazil relations.
