Microsoft Co-Founder Bill Gates has shared an optimistic vision for Africa’s future, forecasting that Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling economic powerhouse, is on track to become the largest city in the world.
Speaking at the Gates Foundation’s Goalkeepers event in Lagos, Gates highlighted the city’s rapid growth as emblematic of Africa’s increasing global significance in the 21st century.
“Africa is a very young continent,” he noted. “More than half of all children born this century will be African. That youthfulness will shape global trends in profound ways.”
Describing Africa as the “most fascinating” region of the century, Gates emphasized the transformative potential of its youthful population. He pointed to Lagos as a striking example of urban expansion on the continent.
“The city we’re in today will, by far, be the largest in the world,” he said. “That’s going to make for a dynamic and vibrant environment—and the world will be watching.”
However, Gates also underscored the critical importance of timely investments in Africa’s future. He stressed that the continent’s potential hinges on strategic decisions made today, especially in health and education.
“Whether this young population drives transformative progress will depend on the choices we make in the next 20 years,” he said. “If we invest wisely, Africa’s future is nothing short of extraordinary.”
